I`m planning on exchanging my stock oil cooler for an aftermarket one.  I`m hoping I can use the braided hose that came with the stock one (I won`t go into how I intend to use it) but if I can`t, what is the best way to attach a new braided hose to a bare metal tube?  I`ve looked on the internet but can`t find any articles on how to do it.  I know I can simply clamp the hose onto a bare tube but is that adequate?  I know there is a tool that will make a nipple on the end of the bare tube for a better seal but I can`t remember what it`s called... anyone know?  Also, what about using a high heat sealant on the tube before clamping it?

Appreciate any help!

Rob

You could probably get away with cutting off the Banjo Fitting and slipping a Hose over the Chromed Tubing and use two Clamps per hose.     It might not look all that appealing, but it will most likely get the seal you're after.    I used a Hose Barb and Single Clamp and have had no problems, so I'm thinking double clamps will do the trick.

If you do it that way you can get a faux fitting to cover the clamps and clean up the app.

i replaced my oil cooler with an after market unit. instead of replacing the fitting on the hose, i re tapped the cooler to the correct thread for the stock banjo bolt.

Does look cool,....but it might not have enough cooling capacity.    For the 1400, an Oil Cooler is a Designed-in Requirement, not an Optional add-on to decrease heat.

Ebay Oil Cooler
Edited by phatalbert on Feb 11, 2010 at 12:39 AM

Looks good but I doubt one will keep it cool enough.

Say you bought one and installed it.  You would need to closely monitor the temp and might have to install a second cooler.  There are several people who installed another style that worked well so i pretty sure 2 of these would do the job.

I would be interested to see how this works out.  Specifically knowing how much ONE drops the temperature because you would see that with 2 installed.

DO install a oil filler plug temp gauge.  That is the oil temp in the crank caae.

Email to Jumpsummo@yahoo.com for Expanded tanks on 800 or 1400.

Gbat installed Sep 2007.

If  the tube is bare the pipe could slip off. The correct way is called an olive and is a small thing that looks like a ladies ring. It is compressed onto the pipe when the fittings are tightened.

Its used for copper water pipe too( in Europe) and all copper piping for oil.

there would be a barbed fitting (nipple) that will compress on to the same application that a oil hose could be used.

Thanks circlip:  I have used an olive before but didn`t think of it for this application.  You are quite correct concerning the slippage factor.  When I tested the connection it did indeed slip.  I now have the rubber tubing wedged in so no slippage can occur.

Thats the same one I was wondering about earlier. How is it working out?  There was a question about how well it would cool.
